Title: Building Control Surveyor

Rate: £46.15 per hour PAYE - £60.00 per hour umbrella rate

Type: Temporary - 12 weeks possible extension

Location: Town Hall, Ingrave Road, Essex CM15 8AY

Opus People Solutions are working with Brentwood Borough Council to recruit for an interim Building Control Surveyor. As directed by the Building Control Manager to assist in undertaking the Services responsibilities in an effective way, and to the highest standards fulfilling this role within the framework of service objectives, the Council's corporate objectives and policies and any legal requirements.

Main Responsibilities:

  • To undertake; under the general direction of the Building Control Manager, any work or duty related to any or all the functions, duties, and responsibilities of the Service and upon others which may from time-to-time be added.
  • To technically evaluate deposited Full Plan Building Regulation applications for compliance with the Building Regulations and all allied legislation, and reject, approve or approve conditionally.
  • To technically evaluate Building notices and Regularisation Certificates for compliance with the legislation and request any additional information deemed necessary.
  • To technically evaluate Approved Inspection Notices/Certificates for compliance with the legislation and approve, approve conditionally, or reject.
  • To record fees as required by the building (prescribed Fees) Regulations.
  • To carry out such visits and inspections as may be necessary where building operations are proposed, are in progress, or have been completed, to ensure compliance with the legislation, codes of practice or guidelines from time to time in force and in accordance with the general policies of the Service.
  • To attend dangerous structures to give advice, make decisions and to take any actions necessary; including the instruction of emergency contractors and liaising with other emergency services as required.
  • To deal with enquiries from members of the public, the Council, firms, institutions, or bodies and to give such proper advice, help or information as is considered appropriate.

Essential Criteria:

Must have a minimum registered as a Class 1 Registration Extension Criteria with the Building Safety Regulator.

  • An existing building control professional.
  • Registered as a Class 1 RBI by 6 April 2024;
  • Enrolled in, and in the process of having their competency assessed through, one of the BSR approved competency assessment schemes by 6 April 2024.
  • A scheme provider has not told them that they have not passed their competency assessment for a second time.

Those who meet the above criteria will be allowed a period of 13 weeks from 6 April 2024 to 6 July 2024 to complete their competency assessment and upgrade their registration to Class 2 or 3 (and 4, if applicable).
