Job Title: Food Safety Support Officer

Location: The role is hybrid and is predominantly focussed on undertaking on-site inspections. Office based activities will be based at the Civic Centre, Darwall Street, Walsall, WS1 1TP

Rate of Pay: £24.09 per hour Umbrella OR £18.53 per hour PAYE

Working Hours: Monday to Friday - Full time

Type: 4 month temporary role

Opus People Solutions are working with Walsall Council to recruit for a Food Safety Support Officer. Under the direction of the Team Leader - Environmental Health Officer to undertake duties in relation to food safety and public health by assisting the Environmental Health team in the operation of the Food Safety programme.

Main Responsibilities:

  • To inspect food premises and practices to ensure compliance with relevant legislation.
  • To evaluate food businesses that fall within the scope of the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme and to provide an accurate rating.
  • To investigate complaints relating to food, hygiene of premises and public health.
  • To investigate cases and outbreaks of food borne and environmentally significant infectious diseases.
  • To support officers in containing major outbreaks of animal disease
  • To undertake revisits to food premises to check for compliance following an inspection.
  • To undertake revisits to food premises to check compliance following the expiry of a Notice.
  • To maintain appropriate records in connection with investigations, revisits and sampling activity.
  • To participate in joint enforcement exercises across Council services and with other enforcement agencies as directed.
  • To liaise with and advise local businesses to ensure compliance with law and best practice.
  • To provide educational and promotional material for the purpose of promoting food and environmental safety.
  • To keep abreast of the developments in the field of food safety, identifying personal training needs and keep colleagues fully appraised of these developments and their implications.
  • Compliance with all corporate policies relating to health and safety, equal opportunities, crime reduction and community safety and service delivery.
  • To undertake such other duties as may be commensurate with the grade and nature of the post.

Experience:

  • Driving Licence required
  • The postholder must hold a Higher Certificate in Food Premises Inspection or a degree in Environmental Health and be working towards EHRB registration
  • The postholder must have a minimum 5 GCSE's or equivalent, including English and the ability and commitment to attain the desired level of qualification to fulfil the duties the post.
  • Participation in cross Council enforcement activities and evidence of the way in which the post holder has contributed towards that.
  • Demonstrate good continuous improvement
  • Demonstrate good customer care skills
  • Good knowledge of Food Safety legislation
  • Understanding of health and safety requirements relating to the post
