Coroners Officer

Pay: £12.70 per hour, 37 hours per week

Location: Beacon House, Ipswich (office based to start with, following successful probation and training, hybrid working would be allowed

Length: until April 2024

Opus People Solutions are recruiting on behalf of Suffolk County Council for a temporary Coroners Officer to join their Coroners Services to act on behalf of HM Coroner for Suffolk carrying out investigations for all deaths referred to the Coroner's service and to make enquires into potential finds of treasure.

As a Coroner's Officer you will have to establish the 4 statutory Coronial questions, who the deceased was, when, where and how they died. You will maintain an accurate file of each case using the electronic case management system and/or a paper file for use in court. Preparing and issuing all relevant paperwork at the conclusion of a case and closing the file, attend court where required to provide court support to HM Coroner. This could include jury supervision, operating court logging equipment or assisting with families and witnesses, manage requests for information including post mortem examination reports, and tissue retention and disposal paperwork, ensuring these are dealt with in a timely fashion within the legal framework and that the relevant database is updated.

The ideal candidate will have proven experience of of working within a busy office environment where a high level of accuracy and attention to detail is required, fully competent in the use of IT and good understanding of medical and legal terminology. The ability to read, understand and interpret complex legislation, policies, procedures and statistical information.

We are looking for someone with a experience within the Coroner's service or a legal, medical department or other comparable service.

Applicants should be aware that the nature of the work of the Coroners service does involve handling and being exposed to upsetting information and regularly speaking to bereaved families.

No DBS check needed but police vetting is required and must be completed before the candidate starts the role.
