The Opportunity

Our client is seeking an experienced Import Clerk to join their freight and customs operation. This is a varied role within a small team environment, requiring someone who is happy to be hands-on across multiple areas of the import process.

The successful candidate will have strong experience managing Deep Sea Import shipments and be confident handling documentation, customs processes, customer communication, and shipment coordination from origin through to final delivery.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys taking ownership of shipments and wants to work in a business that provides end-to-end logistics solutions including freight forwarding, customs clearance, distribution and warehousing.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage Deep Sea Import shipments from booking through to final delivery.
• Coordinate with overseas agents, shipping lines, hauliers and customers.
• Prepare and process import documentation accurately and efficiently.
• Liaise with customs authorities and support customs clearance activities.
• Track and monitor shipment progress, providing proactive updates to customers.
• Resolve operational issues and delays quickly and effectively.
• Arrange delivery schedules and transport requirements.
• Ensure all files, records and customs documentation are maintained accurately.
• Calculate and verify freight, customs and import-related charges.
• Support other freight forwarding and operational activities as required.
• Build strong relationships with customers, suppliers and overseas partners.
• Assist across the wider logistics function, reflecting the collaborative nature of a small team.

Essential Requirements

• Minimum 3-4 years' experience within freight forwarding or logistics.
• Proven experience handling Deep Sea Import shipments.
• Good understanding of UK import procedures and customs processes.
• Experience working with shipping lines, freight networks and overseas agents.
• Strong administration and documentation skills.
• Excellent communication and customer service abilities.
• Ability to prioritise workloads and manage multiple shipments simultaneously.
• High attention to detail and accuracy.
• Comfortable working within a small team where flexibility and teamwork are essential.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and freight management systems.
