Social Worker - Assessment Service | Peterborough City Council

Location: Sand Martin House / Hybrid WFH / Agile working The team operates on a three-week duty rota, meaning each team is only responsible for new referrals once every three weeks.
When teams are on duty it is expected that Social Workers are in the office
Duration: 12 weeks
Hours: 37 hours per week
Pay: £39.00 per hour (Umbrella)

About the Role

Peterborough City Council is seeking an experienced Social Worker to join their Assessment Service. This is a vital frontline role responding to referrals where there are concerns around a child's safety or wellbeing.

Working within a supportive team structure, you will investigate concerns, assess risk, and ensure children's voices are central in all decision‑making. You will carry a varied caseload of statutory assessments and have the support of dedicated business support and practitioners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake Section 17 Single Assessments and Section 47 Enquiries
  • Complete high‑quality assessments within statutory timescales
  • Participate in Initial Child Protection Conferences and Child in Need meetings
  • Conduct home visits and direct work with children and families
  • Prepare Section 7 reports for private law proceedings where required
  • Work effectively within a three‑week duty rota structure
    • When on duty: Social Workers are expected to work from the office
    • Off‑duty weeks: Focus on ongoing casework with more flexible/agile working

What We're Looking For

  • Qualified Social Worker (SWE registered)
  • Strong experience in Children's Services and statutory assessments
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced assessment environment
  • Confident in multi‑agency working and safeguarding decision‑making
