About the job:

We are currently looking for self-driven, resourceful and flexible individuals, with excellent communication skills, to work as youth workers/residential childcare workers within Children’s Homes in Suffolk.

As a youth worker within a Children’s Home you will provide day-to-day support for some of the most vulnerable children in the county. These can include children who have experienced trauma and display high level challenging behaviours.

You will bring your personality, skills and experience to work and help young people develop, grow and have fulfilling lives, making sure they feel welcome, cared for, safe and happy.

Youth Workers will be working in an environment that builds positive relationships and empowers the young people to work towards a better future; developing their social skills with educational and vocational activities and a range of life experiences.

This is a demanding, yet rewarding, role and you will need to have the confidence to manage a mix of challenging behaviours from children and young people. There will be training and plenty of support.

There is an opportunity to progress as many senior roles are filled internally.

Please note, applicants must be over 22 years old.

The Children’s Homes are based in various locations across Suffolk including:

  • Ipswich
  • Bury St Edmunds
  • Stowmarket
  • Beccles

Various hours available including:

  • Days- Full time and part time
  • Nights- Part time
  • Weekends- Part time/As per rota
  • Casual (Relief)- As and when required


  • Promote, safeguard and protect the welfare of each young person
  • Establish and maintain positive and trusting relationships with the young people that will promote their sense of security
  • Provide firm, consistent and fair boundaries in respect of their behaviour and employ appropriate and agreed sanctions
  • Promote the development of a healthy lifestyle for Young People
  • Assist Young People in the development and sustaining of positive social networks with adults and other peer groups
  • Organise and participate in group activities and group holidays
  • Assist in the provision/preparation of meals in the home
  • Assist and support Young People through the process of leaving care
  • Encourage Young People to develop their full educational and vocational attainment
  • Develop and maintain appropriate professional relationships with families and other agencies
  • Attend child care reviews and other forums where children’s needs are being considered
  • Participate in working shift patterns that requires flexibility
  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to deal with different situations.
  • Passion for helping young people work towards a positive future.
  • Ability to keep calm under pressure.
  • All our homes are open 365 days of the year, and you will be required to work on a rota for days, evenings, weekends and bank holidays unless you are a night worker who will be required to work on their designated nights every week and every third Saturday.
  • It would be desirable, but not essential, if you already have Level 3 Diploma in Residential Child Care.
  • You will be required to travel, so you must hold a valid and full driving licence and be willing to drive.
  • Holiday entitlement of up to 31 days per annum, pro rata (including bank holidays)
  • Permanent equivalent council pay rates offered after 12 weeks
