About the job:

Residential children’s experience isn’t necessarily required, but candidates must have transferable skills from a similar field (eg: Youth Workers / family support / SEN / teaching / police etc)

A Residential Childcare Worker in a Children’s Home provides day-to-day support for some of the most vulnerable children in the county. These can include children who have experienced trauma and display high level challenging behaviours. People considering this role must have strong relationship building skills and a lot of patience. Personal qualities can be just as important as qualifications.
Working in residential childcare is necessarily child-focused. It involves getting to know new children and helping them begin to feel secure, then providing ongoing care and support to build their confidence and teach coping skills. It also involves liaising with health and education personnel in order to ensure that they get proper access to other services.

The children we support have often suffered various forms of abuse and neglect and as a result may be withdrawn and disinclined to communicate, or may deal with their stress by becoming aggressive. There is a risk of self-harm and of violence toward staff members and other children, so workers will be trained in de-escalation techniques and first aid.
In some cases, children in residential care homes still have good relationships with their families, and may return to them after difficulties have been resolved. In these situations, workers need to be able to communicate effectively with those family members and ensure that important emotional connections can be maintained.

Shifts are based on a three week rota. You will be expected to work two 9 hour night shifts for two weeks, and three 9 hour shifts on your third week.

Night shifts – 22:00pm to 7:00am

  • Promote, safeguard and protect the welfare of each young person
  • Establish and maintain positive and trusting relationships with the young people that will promote their sense of security
  • Provide firm, consistent and fair boundaries in respect of their behaviour and employ appropriate and agreed sanctions
  • Promote the development of a healthy lifestyle for Young People
  • Assist Young People in the development and sustaining of positive social networks with adults and other peer groups
  • Assist Young People in the development and sustaining of positive social networks with adults and other peer groups
  • Organise and participate in group activities and group holidays
  • Assist in the provision/preparation of meals in the home
  • Assist and support Young People through the process of leaving care
  • Encourage Young People to develop their full educational and vocational attainment
  • Attend and contribute to supervisions and team meetings
  • Develop and maintain appropriate professional relationships with families and other agencies
  • Attend child care reviews and other forums where children’s needs are being considered
  • Participate in working shift patterns that requires flexibility
