About the job:

We are looking for a Regulatory Unit [Environmental Health] Practitioner for Milton Keynes Council.

For the temporary posts we are looking for a motivated Environmental Health Practitioner to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

They will cover the broad range of environmental health topics in particular assist in the delivery of our food safety official controls programme and have the ability to investigate a range of food safety, public health and health and safety matters.

They would therefore require to be:

EHORB registered or equivalent

Food Competent as defined by the FSA Code of Practice

Have recent experience of undertaking food inspections for a LA/food authority.

To meet the specific requirements contained within relevant legislation and Milton Keynes Council’s policies, procedures and processes with regards to compliance with legislation and law enforcement.

To support and protect the health, safety and economic well-being of all staff, residents, visitors and the environment; along with the economic status of all businesses operating from and within the council area.



Members of the public and traders, employers, employees, consultants, developers will be dealt with on a daily basis when supporting and advising them of legislation. Other organisations, including the following – Regulatory Support Unit at the Local Government Group, CLG, DECC, AWS, BIS, Defra, Food Standards Agency, other local authority regulators, DWP, SOCA, the Health Protection Unit, the Health Protection Agency, the Health & Safety Executive CPS and lead officers from other Local Authorities, emergency services, architects, engineers, energy agencies, European agencies, parish councillors, ward councillors, heads of service and other senior officers across the council, Chamber of Commerce, CABx, Consumer Direct, Age UK, Mediation service, MK Act, RSL’s, mental health and social services will be engaged with on a case by case basis.

In all of these relationships the officer will be trying to negotiate and influence individuals and groups so that legislation can be used to the best advantage of Milton Keynes visitors, residents, businesses and its environment.

Key relationships with government agencies are to deliver the legal and national requirements set by these organisations.

The role holder represents the local authority on regional groups and national groups to interpret legislation and good practice, plus disseminate information.

Where applicable, positively impact on the local community by ensuring developments are sustainable, accessible to all, safe and healthy to live, work and socialise in.

All other contacts are maintained to support the functions of the service.

Delivering the services the post holder manages will impact as follows:

Risks to the health, safety & welfare of individuals and the environment can be reduced by ensuring compliance with legislation.

Traders affected by the service are assisted in operating effectively and economically, thus causing them to succeed

Residents will have the right information so will be able to make informed decisions, thus reducing the potential to suffer financially or through ill-health.

The reputation of the authority will be good and the council will be able to perform in line with government expectations.
