Environmental Health Officer with Food Inspection Qualifications and Experience- East Northamptonshire Council

Opus Northamptonshire on behalf of East Northamptonshire Council is looking for Environmental Health Officer with Food Inspection Qualifications and Experience.


  • Involve the inspection of commercial premises for all environmental health functions to include programmed visits, response to complaints, licensing and registration of premises and processes, food sampling, pollution monitoring, provision of health promotion and education over the full range of duties covered together with training for local businesses and their employees.
  • The preparation of reports and notices, service of notices, keeping of records and the pursuance of prosecutions incidental to the work of the section.  To carry out any other duties appropriate to a qualified Environmental Health Officer as may be directed.
  • To take all appropriate action including the preparation and service of Improvement Notices, Prohibition Notices, Abatement Notices and the detention and seizure of unfit food. The preparation of reports and letters. The pursuance of prosecutions and closure of businesses where appropriate.
  • Investigation of any infectious disease, food poisoning or infestation.
  • Consultation on plans submitted for planning permission and building regulation approval and recommendation of relevant conditions or reasons for refusal to ensure environmental health matters are addressed in a proactive manner.
  • Organisation of Health Promotion, Health Education and Environmental Awareness activities including talks, lectures and lecturing on food hygiene and health and safety courses.


There is an obligation to undertake training in all aspects of the work and to regularly update technical and legislative knowledge of subjects connected with the post. 

The postholder will be based at the Council’s Thrapston Offices and will operate throughout the district.

Duties involve work outside normal office hours and the postholder must be prepared to undertake unsocial hours duties without notice.  These duties are unavoidable for the proper performance of the job and this requirement is reflected in the grading of the post.

The postholder is required to participate in the Environmental Services out of hours standby rota for which an allowance is payable.

To co-operate with the Council, its officers, and staff to enable them, as far as is necessary, to conform and comply with any duty or requirement imposed as a result of any law which may be in force regarding health and safety. 

Not to interfere intentionally or recklessly with anything provided in the interest of health, safety, and welfare.

Length of assignment: initially, 12 weeks.

Pay Rate:£25-£28 p/h (negotiable)

Place of work: office (Thrapston, NN14) and inspection/home based
