About the job:

We are seeking a temporary Education Representative on behalf of the Suffolk County branch of Unison. As an Education Representative you will be expected to work with the branch to build recruitment and organising initiatives and campaigns and support branch communications by preparing information briefings. You will also undertake casework, give advice, support local branch officers and stewards in their representation and negotiation work and provide help with case preparation and administration.

This role will be home based.

  • To support branch communications by preparing emails, newsletters, press/public relations.
  • To support the branch secretary and other local activists in collective negotiations, researching relevant agreements with employers, writing up claims, making presentations, and engaging with employers as required.
  • To increase participation in a member-based organisation by applying a clear understanding of equalities.
  • To carry out recruitment activity planning and delivery which will include membership mapping across workplaces.
  • To carry out research to support campaigns on relevant issues.
  • To organise groups of Unison members and representatives within educational settings to identify workplace issues.
  • To work with new stewards/representatives and encourage them to train as COVID School/Education monitors and Health and Safety Reps.
  • To organise meetings for school/education reps supported by senior branch officers.
  • To put together the twice termly education newsletter for members with support from branch officers and staff.
  • To carry out collective bargaining at workplace level to support negotiation of issues such as pay, working patterns and health and safety issues.



  • Experience of developing solutions to resolve problems.
  • Strong organisational skills.
  • An ability to prioritise your own workload.
  • Union knowledge.
  • The ability to work flexibly to meet the needs of Unison members. Some occasional unsocial working hours should be anticipated
