About the job:

We are seeking an individual with excellent communication skills and a working knowledge of council tax collection to work in Milton Keynes Council’s Corporate Debt Recovery team to ensure that it meets its purpose to maximise the recovery of debts owed to Milton Keynes Council.

  • Monitor and collect outstanding debts from a range of individuals and organisations who have received services from Milton Keynes Council to ensure that recovery is maximised.
  • Apply a single view of debt approach to collection and recovery processes in order to provide a holistic response to the recovery of a customer’s overall debt to the Council
  • Make arrangements to pay by instalments, monitor arrangements and enforce compliance against defaulters
  • Resolve to conclusion telephone, face-to-face and written enquiries, regarding the recovery of debts, from members of the public, external agencies and council employees
  • Identify cases which should be referred for court or insolvency action and collate all documentation required for legal action to be taken.
  • Make arrangements to pay by instalments, monitor arrangements and enforce compliance against defaulters
  • Resolve to conclusion telephone, face-to-face and written enquiries, regarding the recovery of debts, from members of the public, external agencies and council employees
  • Identify cases which should be referred for court or insolvency action and collate all documentation required for legal action to be taken.
  • Liaise with, and monitor the performance of external collection agencies contracted to collect outstanding debts to ensure that debts are collected in a timely manner and with regard to statutory requirements and the Council’s code of practice.
  • Assist with enquiries at the Magistrates and County Court when required, in order that customer queries may be resolved, where possible, prior to the Court hearing
  • Prepare and submit unrecoverable debts for write off
  • Demonstrated skill and knowledge of understanding and meeting the needs of customers
  • Excellent communication skills

  • Respectful of the sensitivity of Service data and able to operate with integrity and professional judgement at all times.
  • GCSE English & Maths grade A – C, or equivalent
  • IT literate in Microsoft Office applications
  • Experience of Council Tax, recovery experience is desirable
  • Specific knowledge and ability in the use of SAP, Information @ Work, Northgate Revenues & Benefits & Northgate Housing systems is desirable
  • Holiday entitlement of up to 31 days per annum, pro rata (including bank holidays).
  • Permanent equivalent council pay rates offered after 10 weeks
