About the job:

As a Contact Tracing Specialist for Cambridgeshire County Council through Opus Cambridgeshire, you will lead community covid-19 outbreaks across a range of settings, but particularly schools, early years and vulnerable groups settings. In addition, you may be responsible for line-managing non-specialist staff to follow up non-complex cases and/or contacts of people with covid-19/follow-up individual cases/contacts that are more complex.

37 hours per week – 9.00am to 5.00pm, 5 out of 7 days, Monday to Sunday.  Occasional evening working will be required, together with regular weekend working

Remote working but will require some in person assessment of competence and monthly face-to-face supervision.  Face to face interviews of Covid-19 related cases could be required.

Travel across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough is a requirement for this position.


  • Maintain liaison with Tier 1a teams (PHE Health Protection Teams and PHE Field Service Teams), Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council Outbreak Management Team and relevant Local Outbreak Control Plan workstream leads to deliver contact tracing functions including the provision of appropriate public health advice in complex incidents/outbreaks.
  • Work closely with and report to the Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council contact tracing specialist lead to support the ongoing development and operationalisation of the contact tracing programme.
  • Undertake initial interview of COVID-19 cases (either over the phone or face-to-face as appropriate), undertake a public health risk assessment, identify contacts and provide public health advice (where appropriate) working to standard protocols and national guidance.
  • Assess and escalate situations to Tier 1a teams as appropriate
  • Support the contact tracing specialist lead to coordinate activities to operationalise (locally) national contact tracing and outbreak management guidance, including through the creation of SOPs, supporting and training materials. Work with workstream leads to continually improve these documents.
  • Assess and manage complex contacts, cases and situations passed to CCC/PCC local authority by Tier 2 (as appropriate)
    – supervise non-specialist Call Handlers in the delivery of their roles through the provision of clear advice and escalation of issues as appropriate.
  • Support the contact tracing specialist lead to develop and maintain effective arrangements for the escalation of issues between tiers of the contact tracing delivery model.

Candidates will be educated to degree level/equivalent within a health related/environmental health field, such as health protection, sexual health, infectious diseases, infection control or environmental health. A sound knowledge of the principles of health protection including contact tracing and basic principles of outbreak control is required.  Successful candidates will be able to undertake public health risk assessments and manage situations effectively and identify, manage and escalate risk. Travel across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough is a requirement for this position.
