Childcare Lawyer

You will primarily be required to represent Children and Young People’s Services (‘CYPS’) in proceedings before the Family Court. You will also be required to provide comprehensive advice on the Children Act 1989 and the Adoption and Children Act 2002 and associated regulations issued under the Acts.

Reporting to the Lead Lawyer for the Safeguarding Practice Group

  • The postholder must show a commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults.
  • Representation of Suffolk County Council in the Family Court. This includes all associated work in respect of preparing and presenting the case.

Provision of legal advice

  • Provision of legal advice relating to the protection of vulnerable children
  • Providing specific advice to child protection conferences to consider whether there are grounds to commence proceedings and, if so, whether it is appropriate to do so, taking into account concerns of the involved professionals and CYPS plans for the children and compliance with statutory duties and obligations upon CYPS as the principal agency charged with the function of child protection.

Case Management

  • You will be responsible for a substantial caseload. As a lawyer with conduct of litigation the jobholder is under a professional duty to the Client and to the court.   In consultation with CYPS you are responsible for making decisions as to where and on what cases it is appropriate to instruct our in-house advocates.

Legal Drafting

  • Drafting originating applications, directions and proposed court orders. Prepare and amend statements of evidence.  You will formally instruct expert witnesses and deal with high levels of correspondence.

Other Duties

  • To provide cover for legal advice on community care and mental health matters
  • To guide and develop Trainee Solicitors and Legal Assistants
  • You will be responsible for carrying out file reviews under the department’s quality procedures.
  • You may be required to provide training to CYPS and provide lectures and seminars
  • General legal and administrative work when required.
