About the job:

Opus People Solutions on behalf of West Northamptonshire Council are looking to recruit an excellent team player who has the skills, qualities and experience needed to help the Co-ordinator manage the day-to-day operation of the night shelter, support a large team of volunteers and improve guests’ life chances.

As a Casual Assistant Night Shelter Co-ordinator you will support the delivery of a high-quality Winter Shelter and support service for men and women who are sleeping rough or are at imminent risk of sleeping rough and ensure that, subject to a risk assessment, they are offered a place to stay that is safe, warm and dry while they engage with services best placed to address their housing and support needs.

A suitable candidate will work proactively with other services and organisations to ensure that rough sleepers are provided with the help, advice and support they need to come off the streets and that, during their stay in the Winter Shelter, they receive the support that they need.

To meet the requirements of this key role, you must be able to work night shifts and some weekends.

This role is being offered, initially, as a 3 month placement. Up to 37 hours per week. Working Pattern: PT (Pro Rata).

As the role involves working with vulnerable adults and young people, the appointment will be subject to a satisfactory DBS check.

  • Manage the delivery of the role to produce a welcoming environment, leading to increasing trust of our guests in the Shelter provision and the wrap-around service provided.
  • Oversee the use of the main kitchen and dining room, ensuring safe food delivery and correct handling of equipment by guests, visitors and staff.
  • Work with the on-site security to quickly and calmly diffuse any tensions and creatively resolve any issues that may arise from time to time.
  • Maintain accurate records of shift activity, including working with security to produce a daily guest temperature log for Covid-19 monitoring purposes, and a record of who stayed each night, and who was booked-in but did not stay.
  • Regularly floor walk all areas of the building during the night to ensure all is calm and quiet, enabling guests to feel safe and be able to get a quality night’s sleep.
  • Be available at any point during the shift for a guest to be able to talk to you, particularly during night shifts.
  • Provide supervision to the agency worker, ensuring in particular that cleaning activities are thorough, contributing to a Covid-19 free environment as far as possible, and that laundry is handled and washed in a safe way.
  • Write a brief summary during each shift, of your interaction with each guest, so that the team leader of the next shift is able to understand what has happened in your shift, and how best to continue to support each guest.
  • Organise the purchase of basic food for your shift, i.e., bread, milk, tea, coffee, sugar and to claim these back through the ERP Gold system in a timely way.
  • Recognise personal and professional boundaries, work in a safe manner and contribute positively to the creation of a safe and healthy working environment, in accordance with the Council’s policies and procedures, to ensure compliance with health and safety requirements.
  • Ensure that everyone working at St John’s Halls Of Residence (including staff, contractors and volunteers) has a safe working environment and is aware of their health and safety obligations.
  • Maintain a good understanding of the Council’s policies and procedures for safeguarding children and vulnerable adults, and alert Children’s Services and/or Adult Social Care if it is suspected that a child or vulnerable adult might be being abused, neglected or harmed.
  • Not to respond to enquiries from any members of the press. In the event a press enquiry is received, this must be forwarded to the Street Service Co-ordinator without delay.
  • Meet periodically with the Street Service Co-ordinator to review performance, resolve any problems, inform decision making and ensure a high standard of work, an equitable distribution of the workload and the effective monitoring of performance against targets.
  • Perform any other duties (consistent with the grade and objectives of the post) that are required by the Street Service Co-ordinator or the Single Homelessness Pathway Manager in order to ensure the delivery of a high quality, responsive and effective Winter Shelter.
  • Holiday entitlement accrued while working
  • Pension contribution from employer

  • Opportunity to apply for permanent positions as an ‘internal candidate’
  • Gain experience to support permanent applications
