About the job:

We are currently seeking an Assistant Communications Officer to join the communication team at Northamptonshire County Council until 31st March 2021.

As Assistant Communications Officer you will provide support to Northamptonshire County Council’s Communications Team in all areas of its work including media relations, corporate communications and campaign management and monitoring. The role will involve preparing, drafting and editing communication messages and materials and assisting the media relations function by fielding media inquiries, drafting content and monitoring news media.

The role will include:

-Helping implement communications projects and strategies

-Drafting and editing materials and communications copy

-Collecting data and maintaining databases

  • Providing administrative support for communications activities undertaken by the communications team
  • Drafting and editing communications copy (e.g. press releases, publications, internal and external newsletters, social media posts)
  • Uploading and maintaining web content
  • Executing, monitoring and reporting on social media strategies
  • Creating and publishing social media content as part of corporate campaigns and proactive activity, as well as reactive social media content
  • Maintaining social media campaign activity calendars and schedules
  • Tracking and reporting on campaigns, projects and media exposure
  • Preparing presentations and reports
  • Editing and producing the following:
  •          Our residents’ monthly newsletter
  •          In Northamptonshire
  •          Internal Councillors’ newsletter
  • Assisting with media enquiries and press releases, specifically:
    • To take calls from the media and ensure that enquiries are dealt with in an appropriate and timely manner
    • Researching and drafting statements in response to media enquiries
    • Drafting news releases and features for placing with a range of media including the council’s own digital channels, newspapers, magazines, radio, television and websites
    • -Ensuring that media material is issued to appropriate media in a timely and comprehensive way
    • Monitoring media coverage of county council affairs and produce a regular digest of this.
    • Arranging events such as media briefings and press conferences as required.
  • Ensuring communications team compliance with the county council’s health and safety requirements
  • Updating databases and media lists

Education and Qualifications


  • Relevant marketing, communications and/or public relations qualifications
  • Educated to A level standard or equivalent


Experience and Knowledge



  • Proven experience as a Communications Assistant, Communication Specialist or similar role working in a busy office environment.
  • Administrative and social media marketing experience
  • Awareness of role and activities of a large county councilExperience of working as a journalist or media relations practitionerAbility and Skills 
  • Experience of using databases
  • Familiar with Google Analytics and able to use word processing and design packages such as Adobe, Mailchimp or similar.
  • Demonstrable ability to write plain English quickly.
  • Ability to challenge for and ascertain key facts quickly.
  • Ability to translate and convey complex information in a simple readily understood manner.
  • Detailed understanding of how the media operates.
  • An excellent communicator with strong attention to detail.
  • Administrative and social media marketing experience
  • Demonstrable ability to write plain English quickly.
  • Ability to challenge for and ascertain key facts quickly.
  • Ability to translate and convey complex information in a simple readily understood manner.
  • Detailed understanding of how the media operates.
  • Understanding of media relations and digital media strategies
  • Proficient in MS Office; familiarity with design software (e.g. Photoshop, InDesign) and content management systems is a plus
  • Solid editing and researching skills
  • Excellent communication abilities (oral and written)
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong organisational skills
  • An understanding and familiarity with Veulio media monitoring systems
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to Health and Safety
  • A strong team player who can work with minimum supervision
